(Detroit, MI–February 17,2015) If you have ventured down to Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation lately, you have likely noticed the construction going on at Children’s Hospital of Michigan DMC. Due to this construction the existing Ronald McDonald House, located adjacent to Children’s Hospital of Michigan, is moving to provide space for the hospital’s Critical Care Tower which is currently under construction. The Ronald McDonald House of Detroit provides low-cost housing for families who have a child receiving in-patient or out-patient care at a Detroit area hospital.
To assist families in getting to and from the new Ronald McDonald House location a new passenger van, donated by the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation and Szott Auto Group, will soon provide transportation. Families staying at the new Ronald McDonald House while their children are treated at Children’s Hospital of Michigan will have free 24-hour, door-to-door transportation between the two buildings which are located about a half-mile apart.
“We are pleased that Szott Auto Group reached out to us to suggest partnering to donate the van, so that families will be able to travel conveniently between the hospital and Ronald McDonald House,” said Tony Werner, president and CEO of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation
Drivers will operate the van 24 hours a day to transport family members staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit at no charge. “We are grateful for this grant to provide easy access to Children’s Hospital for the families who will stay at our new location at 4727 St. Antoine. With the new van, family members can go back and forth to the hospital whenever they want, which is very important to the well-being of the patient and family members,” said Jennifer Litomisky, executive director of Ronald McDonald House of Detroit.
The nonprofit Ronald McDonald House of Detroit hosts 1,200 to 1,500 families annually, providing not only a place to stay, but also counseling and other supportive services for children and adults. The new facility opened in the former Hutzel Hospital on the Detroit Medical Center campus early in 2015.
